Bangladesh Independence Day is a national holiday in Bangladesh celebrated
every year on March 26. This day marks the anniversary of Bangladesh's
declaration of independence from Pakistan in 1971, after a long and bloody war
of liberation.
The struggle for independence in Bangladesh began in the early 1950s, with
demands for greater political autonomy and rights for the Bengali-speaking
majority in what was then known as East Pakistan. The West Pakistani-dominated
government repeatedly denied these demands, leading to growing resentment and
protests in East Pakistan.
In 1970, national elections were held in Pakistan, and the Awami League, a
political party representing East Pakistan, won a landslide victory. However,
the military rulers in West Pakistan refused to hand over power to the Awami
League, triggering widespread civil unrest and a crackdown by the Pakistani
army.
On March 25, 1971, the Pakistani army launched a brutal campaign to crush the
independence movement, targeting intellectuals, activists, and ordinary
people. The campaign, which came to be known as Operation Searchlight, led to
the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people and forced millions of others to
flee to neighboring India.
In response, the Awami League leader Sheikh Mujibur Rahman declared
independence for Bangladesh on March 26, 1971, and called on the people to
resist the Pakistani army's occupation. The war of liberation that followed
lasted for nine months, with the Indian army intervening on behalf of
Bangladesh in December 1971.
Finally, on December 16, 1971, Pakistan surrendered to the Indian and
Bangladeshi forces, and Bangladesh emerged as an independent country. The war
had cost the lives of millions of people and left the country in ruins, but it
had also galvanized a new sense of national pride and identity among
Bangladeshis.
Today, Bangladesh Independence Day is celebrated with great enthusiasm across
the country, with parades, flag hoisting ceremonies, and cultural events. The
day is a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who fought for the country's
freedom and a celebration of the country's rich cultural heritage and
achievements. It is also an occasion to reaffirm the values of democracy,
justice, and freedom, which are the pillars of Bangladesh's identity as an
independent nation.
